Unity of Irving

1971-2010

Member of the association of Unity churches

Affiliated with Unity School of Christianity

"It started with love, light, and prayers and was divinely guided to the present."

It's a quote from one of the founders of Unity church of Irving at the 20th reunion in 1991. In the beginning on July 15, 1971, thirty people met in the home of Alice and Bill Furman to organize and plan for what was to become Unity Church of Irving. Under Rev. Marie Paben Juneau it was announced that the group would rent the space above Christies Furniture Store located at 1615 West Irving Blvd.

The Group continued to meet in this facility for one year. Unity church of Irving was dedicated September 5, 1971. A certificate of incorporation was filed with the state of Texas, May 5, 1872. By 1976, It was decided the Unity Church of Irving needed a permanent home. On January 10, 1977 property was purchased at 2625 W. Shady Grove.

Two services on Sunday became a necessity and it was decided that a new facility was needed. In 1983 Unity Church of Irving Moved into it's new home at 210 Virginia Street. In 1992 Rev Tom Schumacher began filling our pulpit as guest speaker and was soon persuaded to become our permanent minister. At the time, average attendance had dwindled to 12 to 20 on a Sunday.

Having a teaching background, Tom was able to identify the need for spiritual healing and growth. With his vast knowledge and consistent patience, his energy and enthusiasm filled the church with a new stir. It began to grow once more. Rev Schumacher, through much soul searching over the period of a year, decided it was time for him to move on to other paths. It brought much sadness to Unity of Irving when he left in July 2002.

All through the ministerial search, Rev Tom kept the faith. He believed that God would provide just the right person for us. Sure enough, God apparently wanted continued light in our spiritual family, and He saw fit to send us Rev. Sharon Almond. Rev Sharon graduated from Unity School of Christianity in June 2002. She was with us until March of 2006 when she moved back to St. Louis to be with her ailing Mother.

During that new ministrial search interim, we celebrated many of the area's fine religious ministers, teachers and chaplains, and from as far away as Houston, Santa Fe and Colorado Springs, for weekly guest speakers.

Suddenly, in August 2007, God sent to us the Reverends Frank and Margaret Pounders. By October, the members and board unamiously voted for them to become our new ministers. With the many years of spiritual and practical experience between the Reverends Pounders, what an immense and joyful blessing God has given us!

Unity of Irving's membership has grown to over one hundred in active and outreach membership.
